Rosemary's July Wedding

Rosemary and I met at her trial back in April. We were so happy to have made her up and her party. We went light on the eye shadow but added MAC gel liner in Blacktrack for a tad of definition to the eye. Some bridesmaids got their hair done, while others asked for hair styles. Rosemary's mom was a pleasure to work with, and quite the natural beauty!

Hurricane Irene threatened two weddings last weekend, but our team braved it out!

On Saturday, Candy (hair and makeup artist on our team) travelled to Diana's wedding in Queens as my replacement. Due to the chaos of traffic, streets closing, and the MTA shutting down, Candy came to the rescue! Thankfully, Diana understood the circumstances.

Originally planned for Sunday, the 28th, the day Irene was expected to hit NYC, Marcie's wedding was rescheduled for the day after. Relieved that the stress was over, Erica and I arrived at Marcie's hotel at 6am near WTC for a party of 5. View Marcie's trial here.

Alexandra Paez from New Jersey got her hair and makeup done by us as a gift from her maid of honor, Alba on Friday, August 12. Alex had a fantastic trial just a few days before her wedding.

I changed her eye makeup on the wedding day just a tad since Alex wanted more highlight and liner to it, and it photographed lovely.

The eyeshadow on her eyes looked amazing, but she hardly had any lashes, so I made sure to add them, making her eyes pop!

Erica did a fantastic, clean updo. Here are the photos to prove it.

Marcie's Trial

On Thursday, I met Marcie who was referred by a long time friend. Marcie is getting married in late August, and told us she didn't wear much makeup and her fiance likes her hair loose. Although she wanted to stay on the natural side, I still wanted to have her look like she had some makeup on. After all, this is the day it all comes down to! So I always make sure my brides look their best.

Marcie looks beautiful in temptu pro airbrushed foundation #5 and cheek color. She's also wearing a lip color by FSL Cosmetics and lip shine by L'Oreal Paris. Her lashes were very small and fine and I applied my favorite lashes along with a waterproof black pencil liner by MAC.

Last month, Judy Rondon wed her husband to be in Brooklyn. It was a hot and humid day, so I knew our water-resistant airbrush formula was perfect for her.

Back in September, I was hired for now Mrs. Nicole Washington's wedding. I airbrushed her with S/B foundations and cheek colors by Temptu Pro and MAC shimmer eye shadows. Her eyelashes were a perfect touch to her complete look!

Anne's Trial

Earlier this spring, we had a trial with Anne, a future bride to wed in September. Erica did her hair - she's done some of the cleanest hair you've ever seen! Here's some shots of Anne at her trial.

Anne wanted a natural makeup look, so I decided to go rosy on the cheeks and easy on the eyes. I used a light purple toned eyeshadow by MAC to bring out the green in her eyes. Her brow bones were airbrushed with a great highlighter I like to use by Temptu. Her base was airbrushed using Temptu #3 silicone-based foundation. And I finished her off by adding a gloss by FSL Cosmetics in brown butter.

We can't wait to see Anne all made up on her special day in her wedding dress!

Leang, a beautiful bride from Queens, hired us to glam her up! I airbrushed her using Temptu S/B foundation, blush and highlights. Her lipcolor is from FSL Cosmetics and I used purple shimmery shadows by MAC and L'Oreal's HIP line.

A Dramatic Beauty

Elaine made a beautiful bride.

Elaine, an event planner for the Philadelphia Eagles, married her husband Tim in Staten Island on September 4, 2010. After being extremely satisfied with her makeup for her private photo shoot, she decided that I mimic her dramatic, yet romantic makeup look on her wedding day. And so I did this by creating a brown smokey cat eye, with a heavy black gel liner on her lid, and white pencil liner on her bottom eye line.

We also did Elaine's bridesmaid's makeup.

A Friend's Wedding

The Happy Newlyweds!

Back in May of last year, I had the pleasure of doing my friend's (Jessica) wedding makeup, as well as her mom and the mother of the groom in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island.

On the entire party, I airbrushed them all with a waterbase foundation and cheek color by Temptu. On Jessica, I applied a dark brown eyeshadow and dramatic lashes, along with her favorite MAC lipstick. Jessica has great skin-smooth as a baby-as you can see by the photo on the left with her new husband!

Iris' Wedding Makeup

I did Iris' makeup back in July (I know, I've been slacking on posting wedding recaps-but here I go!)

We didn't do a trial beforehand and she really trusted me enough to create a look I thought would look best upon our first meeting on her wedding day.

We met at her wedding hall in Astoria and I thought she'd look great with a glamorous eye look, and she did! I used all purple and light pink metallic eyeshadows by MAC and a dark rosy lip. And of course, long fabulous lashes.

Iris is now married to her wonderful husband whom I went to college with.

Bridal Shoot Recap

I set up a bridal shoot this past Sunday to showcase the work my bridal hair and makeup team of Ayari's Brides is capable of. We hired five models, all different hair types and skin tones to show our potential clients and future brides that we can work with anyone! We shot with the wonderful photographer of Haus of Hadz once again. Here's our wonderful team (left), which was shot at the end of our shoot. On November 16, 2010, Ayari's Makeup Tour Team had the privilege of receiving an invitation to the Soft Launch Party at the JJ Eyelashes salon in midtown, near Central Park.

New Year's Eve Makeover

On the evening before 2011 arrived, I conducted a makeover on philanthropist Karen Koeningsberg for Janice Dickinson's New Year's Eve Bash and Black Tie Magazine's party that evening as well.

Karen wanted a smokey eye, which I did using dark brown eye shadows to contrast with her beautiful ivory gowns. The look was complete with her glamorous lashes. The rest of Karen's makeup was airbrushed flawlessly leaving her skin glowing radiantly.

The lovely ladies of Scene Stealers, who also work at Urban Latino Magazine (launch party gift bag samplers), just recently interviewed me. You can view more of their recap on my launch party they attended on their blog.

SS - What were some of your inspirations in creating Ayari makeup tour?

A- Ever go out and see a girl who thinks she looks good but she really looks like a drag queen? Or maybe you have so much makeup or skin creams at home that you just don’t know what to do with it all and how to use them? That’s where my tour comes in. We can help with these types of issues.

I began receiving many individual requests for one-on-one makeup lessons last year. And so I decided to perform mini-makeup workshop lessons in NYC and on college campuses. They were pretty successful, and it made me think about conducting them on a larger scale. Rather than targeting college students, for the tour, I want to reach out to real professional women. The tour this time around will comprise of both a makeup lesson and a skin care education session as well.

So, in the end, I want to help that woman who thinks she looks oh-so-good at the club but slapped on way too much makeup that was just not complimenting to her skin and face. My workshops will be her savior. Our tour is like a rescue mission!

SS) Can you elaborate on what to expect on your tour?

A- I want women to be more educated on how to care for their skin. As a makeup artist, I can tell you that caring for your skin is extremely important before applying all those makeup chemicals and particles to your face. And skin care regimens are a huge trend right now. I thought it would be helpful to lend my at-home tips and tricks without having to spend a fortune at spas or treatment centers. I actually inserted them into the fortune cookies at my launch party. And with skin cancer on the rise, our skin care lesson can teach women how to take better care of their face from all the harmful components we are all exposed to.

The makeup portion will discuss the different types of makeup looks for a specific event (work/day or party/evening) and the different techniques for all different eye shapes. We will also go into the 4 looks I like to call “Clean Seventeen,” “The J Lo Glow,” “Red Carpet Glam,” and “The Smokey Chick.”

I will also show some yucky – and hopefully – inspiring photos on why you should NEVER go to bed without washing your face!

SS) Where are you guys visiting and how long will this tour last?

A-The tour will last a full year with our first stop in NYC on Saturday, February 26, 2011. We are currently focusing on cities within NY and NJ for now. We will then move into Long Island, Westchester, and Jersey City. Outside of these areas depends on how many requests we get from other states. We have already received inquiries from DC and North Carolina, so that may be two possible stops.

SS) How many Ayari Team members are there and what does it take to be part of this unique team?

A- The Ayari’s Makeovers, Inc. team is definitely composed of unique individuals who I have known for some time now. I have Josie Brito, our events Specialist who helps with the planning of the tour stops and executing the promotional parties, like my previous Launch Party. Then there’s Tatiana Fernandez and Lisa Perez who are the Account Managers in charge of booking tour stops. Tati is in charge of NJ cities and Lisa focuses on NY. Should someone outside of the cities I mentioned earlier want our tour to come to her city, she would contact the respective Account Manager and they take it from there. We have Daphne Knott who has helped us tremendously with PR for our Launch Party and we are looking for a PR Specialist to help us overall with our tour.

Then we have my makeup team, Kristin Sepulveda, Adhari Fullman, and Kerryann Pozzi who are all makeup artists (they conducted the mini makeovers at my Launch Party) and will be at the tour stops helping me with the makeup education portion of the workshops. They are also part of my bridal team, www.AyariBrides.com, a division of Ayari’s Makeovers, Inc., which is a full service bridal hair and makeup team.

5) What was your personal opinion of the launch party?

A- I am very happy to say that my Launch Party was definitely a hit with the ladies…and men! Who wouldn’t want to be pampered with manicures, makeovers, massages, drinks and more for just $30! We all know outside of the party, we would be spending a fortune for all of the services rendered. The party was an effort to promote my tour and expose professional women to my brand and my tour idea. Hopefully that message got across. I have received a number of emails asking about the next event. But you will all have to stay tuned. We have some great ideas up our sleeves for 2011. I am also very grateful to have had all my vendors and media sponsors on board.

6) I know your makeup team was using Artistry, and there were tons of cool L'Oreal products in our giftbags as well... what brand do you recommend the most and why?

A- I’m sure people expect me to say MAC – which I love (especially their gel liner, Fluidline in Blacktrack). But I don’t really stick to just one brand. My makeup kit is full of all makeup that I have personally tried on myself and I was pleased with its results. I am a huge fan of L’Oreal’s H.I.P. eye shadows and Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black by L’Oreal Paris. My favorite brand currently is Makeup Forever. They have the best contouring palette I love to use on my photo shoots and brides. And OCC lip tars are incredible! I always use the Mary Kay’s Signature Eye Primer before applying eye shadow, to prevent it from creasing and ensuring the shadow will last longer.

So there’s really not one brand I would just recommend. I would say go to the counters, play with the makeup, and see what you like. Throughout my years as a makeup artist, I have found my favorite brands in respect to certain products that are best for specific purposes. I have found what was best for me and my clients. I also have a great hydrator by Mary Kay and a mist spray I use by Evian. I don’t think I have ever found a better moisturizer than Embryolisse.

7) Whats a good beauty advice that you can give our readers for this winter?

A- SPF! I know, you’re thinking, “But summer’s over.” That’s true. But the winter – especially snow – can be just as harmful as the sun. Actually, it’s 2.5 times more harmful than the beach! When snow is on the ground, the UV rays from the sun bounce off the snow and are attracted to your face. Pretty much the same concept when you are near a beach or pool. Your eyes are also subject to more harm from the UV rays in the snow so wearing shades during the day or goggles when skiing would be smart. My tour will ensure that all of my attendees are sensitized to these skin care harms.

I did it! My Launch Party was a huge success! We sold out days before the event and had a great time. The event consisted of manicures, makeovers, massages, lash extensions and brow threading and waxing. Natasha, originally from Canada, married her husband on Sunday, September 19, in the penthoust in a very hip hotel in midtown Manhattan. I conducted a trial on the Friday prior to the wedding, and Natasha was very specific about wanting to look beautiful, but showing little makeup. We did just that with my airbrushing techiques using Temptu and MAC's eyeshadow in Malt EVER SO SLIGHTLY!

Natasha decided to go with a simple twisted bun, styled by Erica our head hair stylist on our team. And at the end of it all, Natasha looked stunning!

Ayari's Brides was referred again by our wonderful event planners at Moirae Affairs to help Natalia Luna and her bridal party with hair + makeup for her wedding on August 14th. This was our second wedding for the day. Natalia wanted a simple look, yet classic red lips, and we definitely achieved her desired look.

The wedding was held in a church at downtown Brooklyn. And I couldn't help but feel the very romantic aura the area was offering. The day was just beautiful + sunny - a PERFECT day for a wedding.

D&G Inspired Shoot

Ayari + Abiel + Angelique = Triple A Team!

We spent about 3 months trying to put together an editorial shoot with a vision that photographer Abiel Ruiz had when looking through the ads of D&G.

Finally, last week, Abiel hit me up on Facebook so we could finally do the darn thing!!! I wasn't so sure we could pull it all off in 3 days. He wanted at least 4 models, hair stylists and a wardrobe stylist! If you're in this business, you know wardrobe needs at least a 1 or 2 week notice prior to a shoot if you expect him or her to get some good stuff! But luckily, Angelique Velez, a model I met some time ago through some mutual friends, knew a great stylist, Bridgette Bayley. With 5 models, I knew I had to get another makeup artist so I hired my assitant makeup artist, Kristen Sepulveda, who has been working at Sephora and was just hired as a MAC freelance makeup artist! (Go Kris!)

With Abiel's persistence, he managed to get 4 confirmed models (although one last minute cancelled, and 2 new showed up!), and my experience with 2 hair stylists I booked for this, our shoot turned out to be amazing!

We shot around Abiel's way on the Hudson River in Yonkers. The photo is a preview of a melting pot of everyone's awesome work on set!

New Website & New Portfolio!

Back in April, I attended a workshop called TEN Words, hosted by Michael Deville, founder of The Powder Group. I learned the TEN Powerful words that would help me develop a connection to my makeup career and success by using them in my daily life and work. (I would be thrilled to offer this information to you all but then Michael would have less attendees at his workshop =) So feel free to check the workshop out for yourself. You will definitely learn a lot about YOURSELF and how to put yourself out there!)

Anyways, back to the topic of this post. Soon after the workshop was over, Michael offered a complimentary portfolio review. I was thrilled when I learned this while reading an email Michael had sent all his anticipated attendees. I spent three days printing and sorting my photos. My port had never been reviewed or seen before other than my mom. I was extremely apprehensive, yet, excited. So there he was, reviewing away, in front of the attendees. I thought this review was going to be private, but I thought wrong! Michael did like a lot of my photos, but he stressed that there were too many photos with colorful makeup. Although Dany Sanz, found of Make Up For Ever, would have appreciated it, these images were not going to get me the "big bucks" according to Michael. He suggested if I was really serious about getting noticed by agencies, that I focus on doing simple beauty test shoots.

"Simple," I thought.

"I can do that!"

And so I did! The portfolio review was like a catalyst to my new port and site. I dedicated a month towards nothing but beauty test shoots, and I must admit, the metamorphosis of my portfolio worked out for the better in the end. It even encouraged me to revamp my website, and make it simpler. Check it out at www.AyariMakeOvers.com.

Shoot with Claire from Season 10 of America's Next Top Model

Remember the infamous Cycle 10 of ANTM, where the season focused on the future? It's the season where the first plus size model, Whitney Thompson, won the contest. Well, one of the most memorable models that season was Claire Unabria, and I had the pleasure of shooting with her back in 2008 with Photographer Brandon Gilbert. Unfortunately, I had lost my CD with all the raw files and lost touch with the photographer.

Thankfully I had found my CD some time last month, and managed to get them retouched by a professional. Here's the image of the shoot, which has definitely made it into my portfolio. (Not all photos from every shoot make the cut into my port. Only the very best!)

How To Fake a Summer Tan!

The Top Three Dangers In Your Beauty Products as told by Dr. Oz

1. Mineral Powder

Dr. Oz recommends to choose liquid-based foundation with shimmer or a cream blush or bronzer to get the same effect. If you must use powder, select a pressed powder and open a window when you apply it. Dr. Oz says NO to Mineral makeup. The particles in it are so tiny they fall quickly through the air and can be inhaled easily into your lungs. These minerals get into the lungs and scar the lungs. Experts say the long-term use and inhalation of minerals in makeup can lead to inflammation, irritation, and lung disease in women and girls.

2. Wrinkle Creams

These creams are designed to penetrate deep into your skin where the blood vessels are, the newer creams are actually better absorbed by your body, which means they have a greater potential to cause problems. In order to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, they plump up the skin by inflaming it with products that are actually irritating to the skin and break down collagen, encouraging more wrinkles down the road. The same goes for fragrances as harmless sounding as lavender, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and peppermint.

Look for these ingredients in wrinkle creams:

Fragrance-free
Color-free
Vitamin A-Retinol: a product that actually does work to improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles
Vitamin C: an effective collagen builder
Alpha hydroxy acid: a good exfoliant and collagen builder Use these products at night, because the sun will actually oxidize the ingredients and render them ineffective. Creams that claim to eliminate wrinkles, often damage the skin to produce a wrinkle-free effect.

3. Lip Gloss

The shine in lip-gloss comes from petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of oil drilling, and when you spread it on your lips, you end up eating it, which is essentially the same as drinking gasoline. Add up the amount of lip-gloss the average woman uses (and consumes) over a decade, and it equals 7 pounds. The European Union has banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned they could be linked to cancer. Women with breast cancer have twice the levels of hydrocarbons (substances found in petroleum jelly) in their breasts than women who haven’t had breast cancer. Steer clear of any products that list petroleum jelly or mineral oil on the ingredient list.

Choose lip treatments that look more like lipstick and avoid any that advertise lip “plumping” capabilities. They contain products that irritate your lips to make them swell and look larger.
Select products with sunscreen to protect your lips from the carcinogenic effects of the sun (look for zinc oxide on the ingredient list), and glosses made from beeswax, or organic lip treatments which is completely non-toxic.
If you are deeply attached to a petroleum-based gloss, save it for special occasions and use a sunscreen under it to protect your lips.

BET's Rip the Runway 2010 Recap

On February 27, 2010 I was privileged to work with the makeup team behind the scenes at the annual Rip the Runway fashion show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Though we worked incredibly hard back stage and things were a bit hectic, I was so happy to be a part of this production.

As Nikki Minaj opened the show with co-host Pooch (star from TV series "The Game"), I couldn't help but notice her convincing British accent (which lasted a while) - - until it stopped. She definitely did not leave the building without a performance of her own, as she took the stage with none other than Ludacris (image on left). But the opening performance belonged to the baddest Trina herself.

Other performers were Janelle Monae who, poor thing, ripped her pants on stage (image on right), Soulja Boy, B.O.B., and Estelle.

Volunteering with The Powder Group

I know some of us are very passionate about giving back to Haiti and I wanted to inform you all that I will be volunteering as a makeup artist on 2/12 with The Powder Group for an event called Healing Arts for Haiti. It is a benefit bringing together various businesses in the wellness,health and beauty industries to raise money for UNICEF's efforts in Haiti. The Powder Group team will be doing mini-makeovers on attendees of the event.

The event is from 12pm to 8pm and you can catch me there from 12pm to 4pm. It will be located at the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central (42nd St.) in NYC.

It seems that the spray-on foundation is the new fast-growing beauty trend. It's a cheaper and quicker alternative to buying and using a professional airbrush.

Tip: Since spray-on foundations tend to run darker, choose a color lighter than your skintone.

At the moment, I am trying to learn more about special effects (SFX) make-up techniques to make myself more marketable in this industry, and because I think it would be some fun to add to my resume. Sure, bridal and beauty make up gigs pay the bills, but I'm ready to try new things! Why limit myself? Make-up can go such a long way!

Here I list 2 of the most famous MUAs that really inspire me to further my career in SFX.

Greg Cannom, who won this year?s Oscar for Achievement in Makeup for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, is a nine-time Oscar nominee (he also won for Mrs. Doubtfire and Dracula). He has more than 100 film and television credits, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander, The Passion of the Christ, Titanic and A Beautiful Mind.

Joel Harlow is a professional special effects and makeup artist and a two-time EMMY Award winning makeup artist. He worked on movies such as The Grinch, A.I., X-Men, Planet of the Apes, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3, and Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp below--I can't tell you how much I love this look!)

Practical or Just a Waste of Fabric?

On Sunday morning I headed to the L'Oreal Professionel hair salon where I was, once again, going to receive a free hair coloring make over as a hair model for their usual classes. As the assistant was in the process of "breaking my base" (a term used by hair colorists, which refers to evening the color between your base/roots and the rest of your hair, and toning it all together to an even color), she engaged in a conversation with another assistant about new fashion trend ads.

I overheard her mention, "Have you seen American Apparel's new assless tights?"

I thought, "Assless tights? WTF?!"

I hadn't seen the ad, so as curious a I was, I decided to do some research. I finally found them in the "Coming Soon" section of the American Apparel website.

So after looking at this, are these pantyhose practical at all? Or is it just another attempt for American Apparel to distract customers by once again being a mix of raunchy and controversial?

Every Model's Worst Nightmare!

I've seen models forced to wear shoes that don't fit them, or shoes they've never practiced in walking the runway. Every model's worst nightmare (besides gaining a pound or two) is to fall during her walk, and having the whole world laugh at her...like this one anchor who just can't stop cracking up at this model falling.

It reminded me of the time I saw Whitney Eve (on The Hills) fall down the stairs as she modeled her dress on a live TV interview.
MORTIFYING!!! I'm glad I'm always backstage in my flip flops.
